JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA leader, Herman Mashaba said that it is surprising to see Thabo Mbeki campaigning for the African National Congress (ANC) despite his criticism of the governing party’s leadership.

Last year, the former ANC president was skeptical about waving the ANC banner, saying it has not lived up to its promises.

Speaking to Eyewitness News on the sidelines of ActionSA's election campaign on Saturday, Mashaba said Mbeki was also to blame for letting the country down.

“Who was in charge? It was not Jacob Zuma, it was not Cyril Ramaphosa. Cyril Ramaphosa and Zuma came to finish what Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Motlanthe did. So these are the people who are behind the collapse of our country.”

Mbeki, however, has said that his decision to campaign for the ANC is because it is committed to renewing itself.

“To know there are many problems in the country, even problems in the ANC. When we say vote ANC, we are making a commitment to the people that we will attend to the problems within the ANC itself to make sure that it is able to discharge its responsibilities to the population.”
