JOHANNESBURG - As some parts of Braamfontein and its surrounding areas enter a third day without electricity, City Power says operations to restore power are underway.

Large parts of Johannesburg's inner city were left in the dark on Workers' Day after an underground fire on the M1 double-decker bridge gutted electricity cables.

The utility said this was due to acts of vandalism, which has been proven by tools that were found at the site.

City Power said its teams are currently clearing rubble along the tunnels before conducting the official assessment.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said, "The outcome will determine the amount of work this will take and also the estimated time when power will be restored.”
