JOHANNESBURG - Engineering experts are expected to start working on the M1 double-decker bridge to ensure its integrity has not been compromised following a fire.

The blaze occurred in the tunnels under the bridge on Tuesday, damaging electricity cables, leaving large parts of the inner city in the dark.

City Power said the inspection by experts is necessary to confirm that it is safe before its own officials can start their work.

"This will basically determine the scope of the work, the amount of material, whether to repair or to replace that is needed around the area, and the estimated time after the repairs are concluded,” said spokesperson, Isaac Mangena.
