Meyiwa murder trial: State accused of leading a trial by ambush amid delays

The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial continued in the Pretoria High Court on 1 August 2023.

JOHANNESBURG - The State in the Senzo Meyiwa trial has been accused of leading a trial by ambush as further delays have been incurred.

The data analyst who probed the phones linked to the accused was back in court on Thursday for cross-examination – two weeks since he last took the stand.

But this could not proceed after the defence complained about not being given all the documents it requires.

When the Senzo Meyiwa trial adjourned on Monday, it was agreed that all relevant documents would be given to the defence by Wednesday, allowing them to consult with the accused with the hope of the trial continuing on Thursday morning.

But on Thursday, the defence told the court that they were still receiving documents from the State at 11pm on Wednesday night.

The defence lawyers have also accused the State of being dishonest with the court about what they have given to them, and ambushing the defence by providing statements and documents in drips and drabs.

State advocate George Baloyi has objected to this reminding the court that they had provided most of the required documents in October last year in a disk – except for the additional forms and statements required by the defence.

All parties have agreed to postpone the matter to Monday for an update from the defence.
