JOHANNESBURG - Transnet’s acting group CEO Michelle Phillips has been appointed as the new chief at the state-owned company.

Phillips was appointed by Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan on Wednesday.

She replaces Portia Derby who faced growing criticism for failing to turn the embattled SOE around.

Towards the end of last year, Transnet saw an exodus of leadership adding to the company’s troubles.

The vacancies coupled with operational constraints at the SOE sparked fears of dire implications for the country’s economy.

In a statement by the Department of Public Enterprises, Phillips has been described as a problem solver and someone held in high regard by the market.

With over 20 years of experience in the business, Phillips is the longest-serving executive at Transnet.

Nosipho Maphumulo has been appointed the group CFO replacing Nonkululeko Dlamini.
